How to Save Money on Your Kids
December 2, 2008 by craigmarc
One way to save money on your kids is to pull the entitlement rug right out from under them. Let’s face it, kids today feel that they have an undeniable right to everything they see or hear about (we would include “read about” in that list, but unless it’s a post on Facebook, there’s not a whole lot of reading going on). To combat this, the smart, dedicated-to-saving-money-in-the-coming-recession parent must set impossibly high standards. Grades, chores, friends, accomplishments, whatever they do, just keep on raising the bar. Let them know they’re falling short. Keep insisting that their best isn’t good enough. Slowly but inevitably, that arrogant sense of privilege will begin to erode. “What have you done for me lately?” will be replaced by “What can I do for you today?” Their confidence shattered, they won’t feel that they are anything special so they won’t feel that they deserve anything special. When you ask them what they want for their birthday and they mumble “nothing,” you’ll know that your job is done.
